About us

We believe our name, in local Fula language says it all. ‘Protect all animals’.

We believe the future for the wildlife, captive animals and the habitats they depend on can be vastly different from the eradication and suffering they currently face.

but we need to act now!

Our
mission

Our Mission The Gambia Wildlife Foundation

We need to act now!

For our goals of rescue, rehabilitation and release, we understand that our project must work alongside the community, whilst actively protecting and preserving the remaining parks and forests

  • To be able to rehabilitate and release wildlife, we need healthy and protected parks and forests

  • To have healthy forests, we need community support to reduce /eliminate deforestation and hunting

  • To have community support we need alternative incomes and solutions

  • To have alternative incomes and solutions, we need ecotourism, volunteer professionals such as primatologists, conservationists, veterinarians and more

  • Eco tourists etc, want to see healthy, protected wildlife and natural areas

and so the circle continues!

PROTECT THE WILDLIFE | PRESERVE THE PARKS | PROSPERITY FOR COMMUNITIES

Grow our mission

The main areas of our work are Rescue - Rehabilation - Release; whilst also providing a safe reserve for those unsuitable for full release.

Reforestation, park protection, community support and conservation will all play important roles

Goal:

A sustainable project, for the benefit of all – the protected parklands, the wildlife, the communities and above all, the future generations

Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release:

  • Rescuing and Rehabilitating Wildlife
Confiscate illegally kept wildlife to rehabilitate them, with the ultimate aim of releasing them back into their natural habitats.

  • Focusing on Red Patas Monkeys
The Red Patas monkey will be our primary focus. Researchers warn that without dedicated conservation efforts, this species could face extinction within the next decade.

  • Upgrading Abuko Orphanage Facilities
Enhancing the facilities at Abuko Orphanage will not only improve animal welfare but also generate increased revenue for the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management (DPWM), supporting broader conservation efforts.

  • Providing Care for Non-Releasable Animals
Animals that cannot be released due to physical or psychological injuries will be cared for in upgraded enclosures at Abuko Orphanage or our designated bush enclosures.

  • Ensuring Ongoing Protection for Released Wildlife
Continuously monitor released animals to guarantee their safety and provide lifelong care and protection

Our VISION

For us, rescue and rehabilitation is the most important sector of our project. We see The Gambia, becoming a thriving reserve for primates, and other remaining wildlife, with communities surrounding the reserves flourishing.

What do we need?

Despite a high number of primates being illegally kept in captivity in The Gambia, the country is lacking a well equipped rehabilitation centre.

How to realise our vision:

Larger rehabilitation enclosures, tall enough for the existing trees to remain inside, for the monkeys to be able to climb freely and regain their strength and skills, after being rescued from their captors where they were kept on a short chain/rope.

Daynano

Daynano ‘bobo hebee horamako’ – the baby is now free, leading the way for other captured primates.

Fobko Goto

Fobko goto – all the same, this phrase relates to all aspects of our project:

Humans/animals and Volunteers/communities working together.

Thriving wildlife/community welfare. It is all the same
